Separating better is a free app that equips parents with the practical information and emotional skills they need to help them self-manage their separation and put arrangements in place that work in the best interests of their children. It has been created by relationship experts at OnePlusOne, a leading relationship research and innovation charity. They were awarded funding from the Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) Reducing Parental Conflict Challenge Fund 2 to create the app. Alongside practical tools which offer help with budgeting and legal arrangements, parents can use Separating better to create their own parenting plan, considering the different needs their children may have.

Course Highlights

  • Access to 'Work it out' videos to help parents navigate difficult conversations and find solutions to typical family scenarios
  • Expert advice and guidance on topics such as the legal separation process, finances, living arrangements, emotional readiness, and effective communication between co-parents
  • A parenting plan and messaging function to help parents stay organised, agree parenting decisions and communicate effectively

Purpose of Programme

Too many separating parents turn to the family courts because they do not know where else to go for information or support.

As a result, parents see separation as a legal rather than relational matter. At least 20% of cases that could be resolved by parents wrongly end up in court (McFarlane, 2022). The adversarial nature of the process further escalates conflict and puts children at risk of poor outcomes. Furthermore, emotional readiness impacts parents’ ability to engage with post-separation negotiations, such as co-parenting arrangements, financial agreements etc., increasing the risk of entrenchment and conflict.

To overcome this, parents need to access support appropriate for their level of emotional readiness, that offers advice, guidance, and practical and emotional support.
